History Of CPL

The origins of Twenty20 cricket in the West Indies can be traced back to 2006 when the Stanford 20/20 tournament was privately organized. However, it wasn’t until 2008 that this competition was officially recognized by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). Unfortunately, it came to an abrupt end in 2009 when its sponsor, Allen Stanford, faced legal issues.

The void left by the Stanford 20/20 was filled by the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament, created by the WICB. This move aimed to coincide with the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 tournament and allowed the top domestic team from the Caribbean Twenty20 to represent the West Indies.

The concept of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) was first announced by the WICB in September 2012. Discussions were in progress to establish a commercial Twenty20 league in the region with an unnamed investor. The WICB finalized an agreement with Ajmal Khan, the founder of Verus International, in December 2012, securing funding for the CPL, set to launch in 2013. The CPL shifted from a territorial format to city-based franchises, with the majority of players coming from the West Indies.

The inaugural CPL took place from 29 July to 26 August in 2013, followed by subsequent editions in 2014, 2015, and 2016. These tournaments have since become a significant part of the West Indies cricket calendar.
