The team is based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and has Sanjeev Goenka as its principal owner. KL Rahul leads the team as captain, with Andy Flower coaching and Gautam Gambhir mentoring. The team qualified for the play-offs in its debut season and is expected to play at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
In August 2021, the IPL governing council invited tenders for two new sides. A total of 22 companies showed interest, but only six serious bidders emerged due to the high base price. In January 2022, the team chose the name Lucknow Super Giants after launching a competition. Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, the franchise drafted KL Rahul as their captain for ₹17 crore, making him the joint highest-paid player in the league.
